The students at St. Vincent De Paul elementary school in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, have been learning about social justice issues and working together to take action. For the third year in a row, they have raised funds and awareness for Save A Family Plan. New this year, they also took up a food collection for the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
The students focused on the global water crisis and specifically how it affects people living in slums and remote villages in India. Teacher Maria Minten-Taylor and her grade 7/8 class studied the book, Thirst, by Varsha Bajaj, for learning and discussion. (Maria is also working with Save A Family Plan to create a study kit that will be available all across the school board!)
This year, the staff and students raised over $1400 to purchase water filtration units through Save A Family Plan’s community development program. Each non-electric filter is provided to an impoverished family living in India, together with related education and training.
The kids really know their stuff! When we asked them who needs water, their answer was resounding: “EVERYONE!”
