During the night on Tuesday, July 30, at around 2 am local time, a series of deadly landslides swept through the hilly regions of Kerala’s Wayanad district in India.  Search and rescue efforts are underway as the region grapples with profound loss of life and widespread destruction.  Rescuers continue to search for people buried under the debris.

The death toll continues to rise toward 400 confirmed to date, with many more injured and hundreds more people reported missing.  More than 420 families in this already poor area have lost everything: homes, crops, livestock, all personal possessions.

Currently, local agencies and the army are providing for immediate needs such as food, clothing, and cots to sleep on.  Officials report that approximately 10,000 citizens have been relocated to 91 emergency relief camps in Wayanad.

Working with our trusted local partners in the area, SAFP is launching a disaster management appeal that will fund long-term, sustainable programs that will support these families over the next several years as they rebuild their lives.

Together, we can make a difference and help the people of Wayanad recover from this devastating disaster. Please donate today.  You can donate online, mail in a cheque (1040 Waterloo Street, London, ON, Canada, N6A-3Y1), e-transfer to etransfer@safp.org, or give by phone at 519-672-1115 (toll-free 1-855-333-1115).

We have been in touch with our local partners.  They tell us that the families in our Family Development Program were not directly impacted by the landslides.

In the event that a program has already become fully funded, or where conditions delay or prevent program implementation, Save A Family Plan may redirect your donation to the organization’s most urgent needs.
